Teeth Whitening
Bleaching the teeth results in tooth whitening, which lightens their colour. After treatment, the teeth normally appear a little bit whiter but not completely white.
It is extremely rarely necessary to whiten your teeth; it is only an elective procedure. The primary inside component of the tooth, dentine, which is slightly softer than the enamel, is penetrated by the bleach via the top layer of enamel. Discoloration is brought on by a reaction between the coloured molecules and the bleach. The dentine then lightens, making the teeth appear whiter. The enamel surface can become more reflective using bleach, giving it a whiter appearance.
When does someone need teeth whitening?
Discoloration of teeth is caused by:
- Either tea, coffee, red wine, or cola.
- When the teeth are developing, excessive fluoride or tetracycline (an antibiotic) smoking is not advised.
Consult your dentist to determine whether teeth whitening is right for you if you’re thinking about it. You should not whiten your teeth if you:
- A mother or a nursing mother
- Teeth that are delicate
- Possess a shrinkage or gum disease
- Flaws or exposed dentine
Whitening procedures won’t lighten pre-existing crowns, veneers, or fillings.
laser whitening
Power bleaching, also known as laser whitening, is done in the clinic. The dentist covers your gums and then paints bleaching agents on the teeth. Laser light is shone to activate the whitening. This takes about 60 minutes, and often only needs one treatment.
Benefits and risks of a teeth-whitening procedure
Teeth whitening can improve the appearance of discoloured teeth. It is also cheaper than some other restorative procedures. However, make sure you find out about the cost, risks and likely outcome before going ahead with treatment.
The most common side-effects, which are often temporary, include:
- Tooth sensitivity, especially from power bleaching
- Irritation of the gums
What happens during a teeth-whitening procedure?
To start, your dentist will make moulds of your top and bottom teeth. These are used to create custom mouthguard-like trays that fit over your teeth.
The bleaching gel is placed in the mouthpiece trays at your subsequent session, and you wear them in your mouth for 15 to 30 minutes. To hasten the whitening process, the dentist could also use a light. The procedure is frequently repeated at home while according to the dentist’s instructions. In two to four weeks, you’ll likely see a change.
